Accra Reading Program

Improving reading habits and the knowledge base of pupils in rural Accra by stocking libraries
with relevant books and by forming reading clubs in the schools and communities in rural areas.

Samuel’s project aims to improve reading habits and the knowledge base of pupils in rural Accra. One of the major challenges facing young students in rural Accra is the lack of access to reading material.

The project will improve reading and raise standards by stocking libraries with relevant books and by forming reading clubs in the schools and communities in rural areas. Reading competitions will be organized periodically with scholarships for selected winners. The effectiveness of the project will be assessed based on:

(1) the number of active enrollments in the various reading clubs;
(2) the number of entrants into the reading competitions; and
(3) the quality the performance of the various entrants into the reading competition every year.

The project will form a partnership with Citi 97.3 FM to inform and update the various communities on all the projects, activities of the clubs, and will collaborate with newspapers to create awareness and generate interest in the project.
