Refurbishing community libraries by persuading the federal and state legislatures to pass the laws to make it mandatory for
each local government to establish and sustain at least 1 functional community library that doubles as a community centre at any point in time.

1000 by 2020 aims to establish or refurbish community libraries which double as community centers in each of the 774 local government areas in Nigeria by December 31, 2020.

The project will persuade the federal and state legislatures to pass the laws to make it mandatory for each local government to establish/upgrade and sustain at least 1 functional community library that doubles as a community centre at any point in time. The libraries will be funded jointly by individual and private sector donors, working with the local the host local governments and beneficiary communities.

By actualizing the right of every citizen, regardless of gender, age, religion or economic status, to have access to any information that is vital to his or her life, community libraries help to develop empowered and resourceful citizens and build a democratic culture from the grassroots.
